The Royal Mint’s British Britannia Series celebrates one of Britain’s most enduring symbols: the female allegory known as Britannia. First used in the 1st century AD as a Roman representation of the British Isles, Britannia was later adopted by Britons as a symbol of their homeland and culture. All 2025 1/4 oz British Gold Britannia Coins offered here come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Individual coins are packaged in protective plastic flips, while multiples of 25 coins are contained in acrylic tubes. The reverse includes four enhanced security features: motion-textured waves in the background, a latent security element, tincture lines on the Union Jack, and micro-text around the design.
Since World War II, Britannia has continued to appear on British coinage, though her representation in popular culture has grown more nuanced. She has occasionally been used in satirical or critical commentary on Britain’s global position, reflecting the nation’s evolving identity in the post-imperial era.
The obverse of the 2025 coins features the first-generation portrait of King Charles III in left-profile relief without a crown. Created in late 2022 by Martin Jennings, this effigy replaced the depiction of Queen Elizabeth II in the Britannia series starting in 2023.
On the reverse, Britannia is shown in a front-facing relief designed by Philip Nathan in 1987. She holds a trident in her right hand and an olive branch resting on a Union Jack emblem in her left, while wearing a Corinthian helmet atop her head.
