The reverse design of Britannia was created in 1987 by Philip Nathan, following a competition to select a modern artistic interpretation of the allegorical figure. Queen Elizabeth II appeared on Britannia coins from 1987 until 2023, when King Charles III made his debut following her passing in late 2022.
On the obverse of the 2025 coin is a left-profile portrait of King Charles III, created by Martin Jennings. This effigy shows His Majesty without a crown and is one of the first to appear on Commonwealth coinage after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
The reverse features Nathan’s depiction of Britannia in full-length, front-facing relief. She wears a Corinthian helmet, holds a trident in her right hand, and rests an olive branch on the Union Jack shield with her left. Additional security elements include a latent security mark, micro-text engraving surrounding Britannia, tincture lines on the Union Jack, and textured wave motion lines across the background.
