The snake, as part of this system, has long been an important symbol in Chinese culture and mythology. In the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac, the snake is the sixth animal.

This is the first time a monarch other than Elizabeth II has featured on the obverse of coins in this series.

This design offers a view of a lush jungle, with mountains on the horizon and a river snaking through the setting. In the foreground, a coiled snake is shown with its head raised above its body as it sits beneath overhanging branches and leaves.
