Britannia’s image originated during Roman rule in Britain and became a long-standing emblem in the British Isles. After fading from prominence following the fall of the Roman Empire, she was revived during the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century as a symbol of naval strength and national identity, coinciding with Britain’s expanding maritime influence and colonial beginnings.
The obverse of the 2025 British Silver Britannia features a portrait of King Charles III. This left-profile effigy depicts the monarch without a crown and was created by Martin Jennings in late 2022, debuting on Britannia coins in mid-2023.
The reverse showcases a modern depiction of Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan in 1987. The full-length figure wears a Corinthian helmet, holds a trident, and rests one hand on a Union Jack shield. The design incorporates several security features, including a textured wave pattern in the background, a latent security element, micro-text, and tincture lines on the Union Jack.
