He is depicted with clawed hands clutching human hearts and a stone knife tongue representing the human sacrifices associated with Aztec religious beliefs.
The reverse side features a portrait of Cuauhtemoc. He was chosen as emperor of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and ruled until August 1521. Cuauhtemoc is remembered for his resistance against the Spanish invasion of Tenochtitlan.
The Aztec Sun Stone is regarded as one of the most significant surviving artifacts from the Aztec Empire. Its design incorporates symbolism representing Aztec beliefs about the formation of the cosmos while also including elements used to track days and months within the Aztec solar calendar.
