This ornate circular design tracks the days and years of the Aztec lunar cycle, marking the 52-year, 365-day cycle of the Aztec solar calendar across 18 distinct 20-day cycles. The Aztec sun stone, or calendar stone, was carved from a massive block of basalt in the early 16th century and showcases the calendar of the ancient Aztec Empire and the Mexica culture. The original stone measures 141 inches across, is 39 inches thick, and weighs an astonishing 54,210 lbs. The portrait design draws on history as well: Cuauhtemoc was the final emperor of the Aztec Empire and ruler of the city of Tenochtitlan, captured by Spanish conquistadors during the sacking of the city in August 1521 and executed four years later under the leadership of Hernan Cortes.
