Buy Gold Coins: Popular Options

When it comes to gold, one of the most popular options is to buy gold coins, especially rare gold coins. Their popularity stems from their quality, rarity, aesthetics and gold value. It is also the most practical way to own gold, as the US government guarantees the gold purity and content.

Here are the most popular gold coins fon the market:

  • Saint Gaudens Double Eagle: Considered the greatest gold coin ever issued, the $20 St Gaudens gold coin is a reflection of the old Greek art. Renowned for its beautiful design and layout, a piece may be priced between $1,600 and $7,000,000.
  • Capped Bust Eagle: A popular collectors’ item, this series lasted for only a decade. The coin depicts Liberty’s right-facing bust on the obverse and a heraldic or small eagle on the back. Depending on the grade, investors may have to pay $2800-$11,000 for this coin.
  • Indian Head Eagle: Originally minted in 1907, the $10 Indian Head Eagle is a must-have item in the collectors’ list. While the coin’s high mint grades cost around $3,000 to $4,000, the lower grades can be purchased around $800.
  • Indian Head Half Eagle: This $5 gold piece has its main design recessed below the surface (compared to other coins with embossed designs), making it a unique addition to one’s collection. It may be priced around $500 to $4,000 on average.
  • Liberty Head Eagle: Issued as part of American life for more than 75 years, the coin’s mint state starting price is around $1,000. However, a common date one can be obtained for less.
  • Liberty Head Double Eagle: This $20 gold piece is popular for its size and almost one full ounce of gold. While the 1857 S-type I cost over $100,000, lower grades can be purchased at $1,600 to millions depending on the rarity.
  • Gold Buffalo coins: The Gold buffalo was introduced in 2006 as the first 24-carat gold bullion coin. Designed after the 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel (designed by James Earle Fraser), the coin’s front depicts the Indian Head design. The reverse depicts the classic buffalo design and inscriptions of the denomination, weight and gold content.
  • American Gold Eagles: Introduced in 1986, the Gold Eagle was originally designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens for the $20 US Double Eagle gold coin (1907-1933). The coin depicts a nest of American eagles on the reverse, which signify the security and strength of American families. Given the beauty, symbolism and stately appearance of the coin, it makes one of the best American coinage designs. The American eagle is available in four sizes, one 0z, half once, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce.
  • 2009 Ultra High Relief: The ultimate coin design that signifies over a century of partnership between the sculptor and the US President Roosevelt. This digitally reproduced version of Saint Gaudens original 1907 Double eagle gold was never put into circulation. This double eagle is available as a one ounce, 24 karat gold coin.

Owning rare gold coins not only serves as a long-term option for you portfolio, but also as a safe hedge against inflation.
