Most Popular US Twenty Dollar Gold Coins

Twenty dollar gold coins minted in the United States are commonly referred to as the Double Eagle. These gold coins are of two types, one with the Liberty design and the other with the Saint Guadens’ design.

•    Liberty Twenty Dollar Gold Coins
These coins were minted in three different varieties at different time periods, which are:

•    “Twenty D”, Liberty Head Coin with no motto, minted between 1849 and 1866.

•    “Twenty D”, Liberty Head Coins with motto minted between 1966 and1876.

•    “Twenty Dollars”, Liberty Head Coins with motto minted between 1877 and 1907.
These coins were designed by James B. Longacre, US Mint’s engraver. They were not produced for daily exchange purposes because $20 was a huge amount for the time when these coins were minted. These coins served the purpose of paying off debts to foreign investors as well as for the purpose of bank transfers. These coins have a gross weight of 33.346 grams with a diameter of 34 mm. They are made up of 90% pure gold content with 10% alloy of copper.

•    Saint Gaudens Twenty Dollar Gold Coins
Three different varieties of these coins were minted in three different time periods, which are:

•    High relief with no motto variant of Saint Gaudens gold coins, which had Roman numerals and were minted in 1907.

•    Low relief with no motto variant of Saint Gaudens gold coins, which had Arabic numerals and were minted between 1907 and1908.

•    Low relief with motto variant of Saint Gaudens gold coins, which had Arabic numerals and were minted between 1908 and 1933.

A sculptor of the US Mint Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed these coins on a special request by President Theodore Roosevelt. The $20 Saint Gaudens coins have a net weight of 33.431 grams with a diameter of 34.1 mm. They, like the twenty dollar Liberty Head coin, have a composition of 90% gold and 10% copper.

Experts in gold artifacts reveal that the Saint Guadens are considered to be rarer than the Liberty head gold pieces. However, both these were minted in the US and can prove helpful in building your portfolio of twenty dollar gold coins.
