China is Coming for Your AI Profits – Why This is Bullish for Gold – Peter Boockvar

The Daniela Cambone Show Jul 17, 2026

Is the AI Boom Entering Its Most Dangerous Phase Yet?

For nearly two years, Wall Street has treated artificial intelligence like an unstoppable money machine. Trillions of dollars have poured into AI infrastructure, semiconductor companies have soared, and investors have rewarded nearly every company associated with the technology.

But according to Peter Boockvar, Chief Investment Officer at One Point BFG Wealth Partners, the next chapter of the AI story may look very different—and it could become surprisingly bullish for gold.

As China’s AI industry rapidly closes the technology gap while dramatically undercutting prices, investors could witness a major shift in global capital flows, weakening confidence in U.S. technology leadership and potentially driving renewed demand for gold and silver as wealth preservation assets.

China’s AI Offensive Is Coming for Silicon Valley’s Profits

Jeff Bezos once famously said:

“Your margin is my opportunity.”

According to Boockvar, China has adopted exactly that strategy.

While U.S. technology giants have collectively invested hundreds of billions of dollars building AI infrastructure, Chinese firms are now releasing increasingly capable AI models at a fraction of the cost.

That changes the investment equation.

Instead of rewarding endless spending, markets are beginning to question whether these massive capital expenditures will ever generate acceptable returns.

Boockvar points to several warning signs:

  • Oracle’s AI-related capital expenditures have exploded.
  • Investors have started questioning whether hyperscalers can justify continued spending.
  • The “buy anything AI” trade has begun to fracture.
  • China’s lower-cost AI ecosystem is creating pricing pressure throughout the industry.

The AI race is no longer simply about innovation.

It is becoming a battle over profit margins.

The Semiconductor Boom May Face Its Biggest Test

The AI revolution hasn’t only benefited software companies.

Memory manufacturers, chipmakers, storage companies, and data center suppliers have all experienced extraordinary demand.

But Boockvar argues that this success is attracting aggressive competition from China.

Chinese companies like CXMT and Yangtze Memory Technologies are rapidly expanding production while focusing first on replacing foreign suppliers inside China’s domestic market.

That creates several risks:

  • Lower global chip prices
  • Shrinking profit margins
  • Reduced market share for Western manufacturers
  • Pressure on future AI infrastructure spending

If AI hardware becomes increasingly commoditized, today’s extraordinary earnings growth may prove difficult to sustain.

Why This Could Trigger Capital Rotation

One of Boockvar’s most overlooked observations involves global portfolio positioning.

Over the past decade, international investors have piled into America’s largest technology companies.

Even central banks and sovereign wealth funds now hold significant positions in the Magnificent Seven.

If those positions begin unwinding, the consequences extend far beyond the stock market.

Potential outcomes include:

  • Investors repatriating capital back to their home countries
  • Reduced demand for U.S. assets
  • A weaker U.S. dollar
  • Increased volatility across global markets

This matters because gold historically performs well during periods of dollar weakness.

Rising Bond Yields Add Another Layer of Risk

Boockvar also highlighted an important development receiving relatively little mainstream attention.

Government bond yields are rising across multiple developed economies.

Recent trends include:

  • Higher U.S. Treasury yields
  • French government bond yields reaching multi-year highs
  • Japanese government bond yields climbing to levels not seen in decades

If international investors decide domestic yields now offer better opportunities than U.S. assets, additional capital could flow out of America.

That would place further pressure on the dollar while strengthening the investment case for alternative stores of value.

What Gold Needs Before Its Next Major Move

Although Boockvar remains constructive on gold, he believes two important conditions must develop before the next sustained rally begins.

1. The Dollar Must Peak

A weakening dollar typically improves gold’s purchasing power globally.

If international capital leaves U.S. technology stocks, dollar demand could soften considerably.

2. Real Interest Rates Must Fall

Perhaps the largest headwind for gold has been rising real yields.

Higher real rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold.

If inflation expectations rise while nominal yields stabilize, real yields would decline—a historically supportive environment for precious metals.

Boockvar also points to an enduring structural trend:

Central banks around the world continue accumulating physical gold despite short-term fluctuations.

That long-term demand has not disappeared.

The Fed Faces a Much More Difficult Job

Much of the interview also focused on newly appointed Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh.

While Warsh has emphasized fighting inflation, Boockvar believes monetary policy alone cannot solve today’s economic challenges.

America continues running historically large fiscal deficits, while slowing economic growth could quickly force policymakers into uncomfortable decisions.

If unemployment rises while inflation remains elevated, the Fed could once again find itself balancing competing priorities.

That uncertainty typically benefits hard assets that exist outside the financial system—including gold and silver.

Housing Remains the Economy’s Biggest Weakness

Boockvar also warned that housing continues acting as one of the largest drags on economic growth.

Key concerns include:

  • Existing home sales remain near multi-decade lows.
  • Housing affordability continues deteriorating.
  • High mortgage rates keep homeowners locked into existing loans.
  • Elevated home prices make ownership increasingly difficult for younger Americans.

Housing represents a significant portion of U.S. economic activity.

If this sector continues struggling while technology spending slows, broader economic weakness could become much harder to ignore.

Why Physical Gold and Silver May Benefit

Periods of technological disruption often create tremendous opportunities—but they also create enormous uncertainty.

If China’s AI challenge compresses corporate profits while global investors reduce exposure to U.S. technology, traditional financial assets may experience significantly higher volatility.

This is where physical gold and physical silver have historically demonstrated their value.

Unlike technology stocks or paper assets, precious metals carry no corporate earnings risk, no counterparty exposure, and no dependence on future profit margins.

For investors focused on:

  • wealth preservation
  • protecting purchasing power
  • diversifying beyond Wall Street
  • reducing exposure to dollar weakness
  • owning tangible assets
  • seeking an inflation hedge
  • evaluating gold vs dollar performance

Physical precious metals continue to serve an important role within a diversified portfolio.

Conclusion

The AI revolution is far from over—but its economics are changing.

China’s rapid emergence as a lower-cost AI competitor may reshape one of Wall Street’s most profitable investment themes, forcing investors to reconsider long-held assumptions about technology leadership, corporate profitability, and global capital flows.

If those shifts weaken the U.S. dollar while real interest rates begin falling, the long-term outlook for gold could become increasingly favorable.

Markets often change direction long before consensus notices.

For investors focused on protecting wealth rather than chasing momentum, understanding these structural shifts may prove far more valuable than predicting the next AI stock winner.
