Buy Liberty Gold Coins for Sound Investment

Blog May 2, 2012

Although there are several options for purchasing gold, Liberty Gold Coins, remain one of the most popular options.

History and Types of Liberty Gold Coins
One of the most promoted old US gold coins, the Liberty gold coins, served as official US currency till 1933, when President Franklin Roosevelt recalled them and most of the coins were melted. These gold coins are preferred over gold bullion because of their limited availability, historical value and monetary value. Although thousands of Liberty gold coins had been minted by the US Mint, most of them have been melted and only about 5% of the original mintage remains. One of the reasons to invest in these coins is that they are highly in demand as a collector’s item. The value of the various types of coins is determined by their denomination, their condition and the place where they were minted. The classic Liberty gold coins of all denominations are considered semi-numismatic or numismatic for the graded coins.

The various types of Liberty gold coins that can be bought are:
A)    The Double Eagle or $20 Liberty gold coin: This series was minted from 1850 to 1907 and the gold content of these coins is 0.967oz.
B)    The Eagles or the $10 Liberty gold coins were first minted in 1838. These coins contain nearly half an ounce of pure gold and are available in two versions, one with a motto and the other without a motto.
C)    The third type is the Half Eagle. These $5 gold coins are the first to be struck by the US government. Highly popular from 1839 to 1907, these coins are available in two versions. The first version did not have any motto and was minted from 1839 to 1866. The design of these coins was created by Christian Gobrecht and features a Liberty head encircled by 13 stars representing the first 13 colonies. The reverse of the coin has a majestic eagle with outstretched wings and surrounded by the words United States of America.  In 1866, the motto “In God We Trust” was added above the head of the eagle.
D)    The $2.5 Liberty Head Gold Coins are amongst the rarest and most highly prized coins from this series. Originally minted from 1840 to 1907, these quarter eagle $2.5 gold coins are of the braided hair style. These coins were produced at five mints, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans and San Francisco. The weight of the coin is 0.12094 ounce, with a diameter of 18 millimeter.

Investors interested in Liberty gold coins need to be aware of the coin’s grade, which refers to the visual examination of the wear suffered by the coin. As per the grading system developed by the American Numismatic Association (ANA), the coins with little wear are graded higher and thus bring higher prices than those with significant wear. However, a low-grade coin may be more valuable than a high grade common date coin because of its rarity. It is best to check the gold quantity and the rarity factor, and ensure that their value reflects the true grading, for Liberty gold coins.
