Some Facts You Should Know about the US Mint’s 2011 Proof American Gold Eagles

The 2011 Proof American Gold Eagle Coins were made available on January 3, 2011.  This was the day when the US Gold Mint started accepting orders by authorized purchasers for the one-ounce bullion variety of these coins. The sale of these coins in 2011 was different from the previous two years because purchasers were now allowed to order any quantity of the 2011 Proof American Gold Eagle Coins.

The sale of the Proof American Gold Eagle coins was much more systematized in 2011 as compared to earlier years (especially 2008), when the suspension of sale, rationing and delay in the release of coins were required to meet the rising demand. The situation worsened in 2009, when the sale of the collector version of the American Gold Eagles was cancelled.

Legislation passed at the end of 2010 led to modification in product requirements to increase production in order to meet the demand for these coins. However, experts say that the US Mint also took up initiatives to acquire precious metal blanks needed by it to increase its production capacity.

The sales of the 2011 Proof American Gold Eagle began on April 21, 2011. The limit for these coins was set at 30,000 for the one-ounce, 15,000 coins for the 1/2 ounce, 16,000 for the 1/4 ounce and 30,000 for the 1/10 ounce coins. The limit set by the Mint for the Four Coin Set was 40,000 units. By this increase in limit, the US Mint met the demand for these coins successfully for the entire year.

The US Mint began the sales of the 2011 W Uncirculated version of the American Gold Eagle on May 5, 2011. This collector’s version of the American Gold Eagles had seen cancellations in the previous two years and finally saw the light of the day in 2011. These one-ounce coins carried the ‘W’ Mint mark, which was struck onto their special burnished blanks.
