Gold In Food – Can You Eat Gold?

Blog Feb 15, 2016

I imagine that as long as there have been people there have been people that eat odd things. And from there the question “what is odd?” naturally arises. Perhaps “odd” is more relevant in the geographic sense, but odd can also be taken perhaps to mean eating something that is not an obvious and appetizing food. So whether it you find it odd or not, people have been eating gold and putting gold in food for centuries.

Today Perhaps The Easiest Way To Find Gold In Food Is To Visit A Confectionery Or Pastry Chef.

And the practice of putting gold in food one way or another is still going on today. But as I said, using gold in food preparation as an ingredient dates back a ways, so we will begin there and work our way to the present day use of gold in food.

Why Do People Eat Gold ? Ancient Romans Used Gold in Food Preparations.

Well, perhaps more correctly the ancient Romans would put gold leaf on their food. Gold was back then as it is now not only a sign of wealth, but gold is also rare. The Romans were known for their grand feasts and the Roman wealthy and powerful had great grand feasts that were extremely showy and ostentatious. Gold plates and gold cups were not uncommon, so perhaps the idea of using gold leaf, which is pure gold pounded very very very thin, to decorate and wrap finished food items was a natural one.

This Is A Simple Roman Banquet Compared To The Ancient Banquets Where Wealthy Romans Would Serve Gold In Food.

My money would be on the bet that said the Romans adorned the outside of their food with gold rather than put gold in food directly as an ingredient, is because they wanted to be obvious about their use of the very expensive gold in food that was meant to be consumed.

But, aside from putting gold in food as an ostentatious show of wealth, there were probably other reasons that the Romans would incorporate gold in food preparations and presentations. The use of gold in food is a long rumored to promote good health and longevity and even virility.

For some reason the use of gold in food has been said to be of benefit to the human body across many cultures, including the Chinese, and across many eras.

In all reality the use of gold in food as a dietary supplement is probably a moot point at best, and ITM Trading is not in the business of recommending dietary supplements in any event. Gold is a nonreactive element and it does not readily combine with most other elements, and pure gold which is the type of gold in food found most often, cannot be broken down any further or easily digested by a human being. More than likely any benefits associated with gold in food would probably be those of the placebo type.

Gold in food vs gold in pills

If Gold In Food Offers No Substantial Health Benefits, Probably Neither Do Gold Pills.

Another thing about gold in food, it makes a lousy ingredient. There are several reasons that gold in food as an ingredient is a poor choice, but perhaps the most problematic is that the melting point of gold in food or anywhere else for that matter is just under 2000°F. Gold in food is also nonreactive with ingredients, it has no taste, and no discernible scent either.

So now that you know that gold in food as an ingredient offers very little in the way of nutrition or even as flavoring, you might think that the expense of putting gold in food would outweigh any benefits of putting gold in food. You would probably be right. As an alternative we can look At another way of “putting gold in food”; giving food a golden moniker.

Gold in Food As a Name: “the Fool’s Gold Loaf Sandwich “

This sandwich was perhaps made most famous by the late great king of rock ‘n roll himself, Elvis Presley. The rumor goes that one night Elvis and a few of his friends boarded his private jet for the sole purpose of flying to Colorado to procure several of these sandwiches.

The Fool’s Gold Loaf Sandwich is made at a restaurant in Denver Colorado called the Colorado Mine Company. Here is the recipe According to Nick Andurlakis, who worked as a Chef and helped create the sandwich:

“The Fool’s Gold Loaf begins with a loaf of French white bread that is covered in two tablespoons of margarine and baked in the oven at 350F/180C until brown.

One pound of bacon slices is fried in oil until crispy and drained. The loaf is sliced lengthwise, hollowed out, and filled with one jar of creamy peanut butter, one jar of grape jelly and one pound of fried bacon.”

Historical accounts go on to say that Elvis preferred his Fool’s Gold Sandwich with blueberry preserves rather than the grape jam, and he like to wash down his Fool’s Gold Sandwich with Champagne and Perrier.

If you would rather put gold in your in your safe, rather than put gold in food items, then please consider allowing ITM Trading to be of service.
