NGC Graded Coins For Sale At ITM Trading
NGC graded coins are coins that have been submitted to and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation company. This company was established in 1987 in Parsippany, New Jersey. In 2004 NGC relocated its offices to Sarasota, Florida. In 2006 NGC once again relocated his offices to a much larger 60,000 ft.² building with secured entrances and exits. This building is still in Sarasota, Florida however. NGC is reported to employ nearly 30 full-time coin graders, and is said to have certified and graded over 33 million coins.
In 1995 the American Numismatic Association named NGC their official grading service. In 2004 the Professional Numismatists Guild named NGC their official grading service. In 2007 NGC released to the public its new EdgeView coin holder, and the next year NGC announced that this coin holder would be adapted and made standard for all coins that were to be graded in the future by NGC.
In 2009 NGC announced an industry first which was applying a scratch resistant coating to its EdgeView coin holder. Many collectors of rare coins think that the NGC EdgeView plastic capsule is the most elegant plastic capsule to protect and display their rare coin investment.
NGC Graded Coins Include All Types of Coins.
NGC graded coins can be either United States coins, or coins from foreign countries. NGC will authenticate the coin, and if the coin is indeed authentic, NGC will note the specific attributes of the coin, such as the date of the strike and the mint of the strike, and perhaps any other coin peculiarities. They will then encapsulate the coin in a clear plastic EdgeView container.
This clear plastic container not only preserves the coin and it’s authentication and provenance paperwork, but the container will also do a great job of protecting the coin from any future damage or wear. In the world of high-priced rare coins, condition is everything. A small nick or a big scratch can have devastating consequences to the dollar value of a rare coin.
This Video Will Show You How NGC Grades Coins.
NGC graded coins don’t have to be coins made of gold or silver. NGC will grade copper pennies or steel pennies, or nickels and dimes and quarters of varying metallic alloys. Because rarity and condition are the major factors in valuing rare coins, a very rare coin which is in very good condition, or “Mint State” condition that is made of bronze, can be much more valuable than a common gold coin that is worn and much larger in size.
NGC Graded Coins Teach Us about Coin Rarity and Coin Populations.
Once NGC graded coins have graduated from the NGC coin grading system, the details about that coin are then entered into an NGC coin census that NGC built and maintains. All NGC graded coins have had their specifics cataloged so that in the future coin information could eventually be devised, categorized, and compiled.
For instance, NGC records the date of each coin, the mint mark of that coin, any particular die variety related to that coin, as well as whether or not the coin may be a particular type of strike such as an “proof strike”, or “commemorative”. Since NGC graded coins have been teaching us about coins’ rarities and populations for nearly three decades now, much clearer views into the world of rare coins has been obtained.
Here is an example; by NGC keeping track of NGC graded coins, numismatists have been able to learn and the databases have revealed that coins that were once thought to be quite rare, have indeed proven to be rather common. In reverse situation, coins that were once thought to be relatively plentiful have proven to be somewhat scarce. NGC graded coins have gone a long way in contributing to the knowledge we have, and the knowledge that we can apply to the rare coin market of today.
PCGS graded coins can also be valued online at www.NGCcoin.com. This website will give you a look into the fair market values of different NGC graded coins. You can also view how a particular coin’s value has changed over time.
During my time as a senior analyst at ITM Trading I would often take clients and potential clients to the NGC website. I was able to show them how particular NGC graded coins that I could put into their physical possession had increased in value over time.
The NGC website tracks public auction and public sales results of what would otherwise often be very private investments. Commonly a comparison between what a coin sold for 8 to 10 years ago versus the retail price of that coin today would produce a result of growth in between 200% and 400%.
