Different US Mint Gold Coins for Collectors and Investors American Buffalo gold coins are minted for investors as well as collectors. The coins that are minted for investors are known as American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins, while those that are minted for collectors are known as American Buffalo Gold Proof Coins. American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins: These US mint gold coins were the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold struck in June 2006. These coins are available to people looking for simple and real means to own and invest in 24 karat gold. These coins can be obtained from many brokerage houses, dealers who deal in coins and precious metals or the participating banks. American Buffalo Gold Proof Coins: These US mint gold coins are specifically for collectors and go through a specialized minting process known as “proof” wherein burnished coin blanks are manually fed into presses that are fitted with special dies. Each of these coins is struck several times in order to obtain a detailed image. Design of the American Buffalo Gold Bullions The design of these American Buffalo, US mint gold coins was created by James Earle Fraser. The front sides of these American Buffalo Gold coins have a symbol of a “native American”, while on the flip side, there is an image of “an American buffalo”. These US mint gold coins were into circulation from 1913 until 1938. These coins cannot be directly obtained from the Mint. An investor can buy it through authorized suppliers or on the secondary market. Three Reasons to Invest in American Buffalo US Mint Gold Coins

  1. American Gold Buffalo coins are the first pure 24 karat US mint gold coins. For years, while purchasing American coins, investors could buy only 22 karat gold. This was because 24 karats are technically softer and it was assumed that the 22 karat gold was strong enough to withstand the rigors of circulation. Investors thus ended up investing in foreign 24 karat gold bullion coins such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. On account of stiff competition in the gold investment market from foreign countries, the Congress approved the production of 24 karat US mint gold coins.
  2. These US mint gold coins are available in smaller sizes and denominations which make it easier to store and trade them as compared to the gold bullion bars.
  3. The gold content and purity of each American Gold Buffalo coin is certified by the US government. These US mint gold coins must contain one troy ounce of 24 karat gold which gives them recognition not only in America’s official grade gold bullion, but throughout the world. Thus, it can easily be converted into cash, if the need arises.

In the initial year of its debut, the value of these US mint gold coins were approximately $800. In 2009, due to unmatched demand for the bullion gold Eagles, Buffalo coins were not struck. According to the law, the mint had to produce enough bullion Eagles to meet demand, which did not leave enough gold blanks for the American Buffalo Gold coins. That changed, however, and the Mint was able to build up enough blank inventory to release the one ounce Buffalo’s on October 15. The demand for these 2009 Gold Buffalo’s were so high that 71,500 coins were sold within the first five days. This year, till now 58,500 of these US mint gold coins have been sold.
