A Genuine $10 Liberty Gold Coin In Mint State 63 Graded By NGC

In part one of this blog-article we began looking at counterfeiting measures used to create a rare gold coin out of a common gold coin, because when you buy rare gold coins online, this method of counterfeiting would be quite difficult for the untrained eye to detect, and buying numismatic gold coins online but receiving counterfeit gold coin in the mailbox is not a successful foray into the world of how to invest in gold coins.

How Counterfeiters Turn A Common Gold Coin Into A Rare Gold Coin
As I stated in the first part of this blog-article, each U.S. Mint marks the coins it produces with it’s unique Mint Mark, with the exception of the Philadelphia Mint, which places no Mint Mark on any coin it produces (the absence of a Mint Mark is your clue that the coin was produced by the Philadelphia Mint). The Philadelphia Mint is also unique in a couple of other ways; it is one of the oldest U.S. Mints still producing coinage, and this mint has produced the most of several different types of coins over the years, including the Double Eagle denomination. These facts play into counterfeiting rare gold coin, and rare Double Eagle coin, and some of the unknown pitfalls of buying numismatic coins online and in person. For instance, a common Double Eagle gold coin may be common because it was produced by the Philadelphia Mint during a year when the Philadelphia Mint was charged with creating a million or more of these particular coins. Conversely, perhaps that same year the Denver Mint was only charged with creating several tens of thousands of the same Double Eagle gold coin. Numismatically speaking, the rarer coin produced by the Denver Mint will have a much higher value than it’s Philadelphia counterpart. Here is where the counterfeiter and his skill comes into play. If you have ever seen the Mint Mark on a Double Eagle gold coin, then you know it is quite small, and is difficult to see clearly with the naked eye. A very skilled counterfeiter will “slice” the “D” Mint Mark off of a more common Double Eagle gold coin produced by the Denver Mint, and then “glue” it onto the Double Eagle produced by the Philadelphia Mint (which is the perfect “blank canvas” because it has no Mint Mark), and if the job is done correctly, the work will only be detectable under high magnification. This can turn a coin with a value of two to three thousand dollars into a counterfeit with a counterfeit value well over ten thousand dollars. The counterfeiting job is then completed by placing the counterfeit product into a counterfeit PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) or NGC (Numismatic Guarantee Corporation) Lucite slab complete with a counterfeit label claiming authenticity and bearing the correct serial number for a real previously graded coin of the correct mintage and denomination. This is a somewhat complicated ruse which requires a high amount of skill, but the payoff is worth it to the counterfeiter.

As you can more clearly see now, the question “where can you buy gold coins?” should really be “where should you buy gold coins?”. How to invest in gold coins and buying gold coins online can be complicated, but ITM Trading makes owning gold easy. There is more to the story, to continue reading, follow this link.
