Investment in Rare Gold: The Best Buys

The 2011 Heritage Fun Rare Gold Coin Sale exhibited the most interesting and rare coins for auction. These included 1864 Quarter Eagle, NGC PR65 Cameo, CAC Gold Label; 1823 Half Eagle, NCG MS65 CAC; 1838-D Half Eagle PCGS MS63 and 1857-O Double Eagle NGC MS62 CAC. These days, rare gold coins are a great investment, as they are standardized by industry-recognized grading procedures, such as Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Besides, their timeless beauty and artistic and long-term value also makes these coins investors’ delight.

Investing in Rare Gold: The Best Buys

Here are some of the rare and high-priced gold coins for collectors and investors to buy:

  • 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle: Designed by Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins are one of America’s rare coins. Produced from 1907 to 1933, many of these coins were melted during 1933 on the orders of President Roosevelt for stabilizing the economy. Those that escaped are now in circulation, which can fetch great returns. With a face value of $20, these coins sold for $7,590,020 in 2002.
  • 1787 Brasher Doubloons: These were the initial gold coins to be privately minted in the US (in and after 1787) by goldsmith and silversmith Ephraim Brasher. The most important coin in numismatics, one of these coins fetched $2.9 million in 2005.
  • 1913 Liberty Head Nickel: The second rarest coin following the 1933 Double Eagle coin, only five pieces of the coin were left, with only three for acquisition. In Might 2007, a piece was sold for $5M.
  • 1894-S Barber Dime: A collector’s favorite, there are only 10 pieces left of the original 24 pieces that were minted in San Francisco. A piece today fetches $2 million.

Investing in Rare Gold Coins: Tips to Remember

Anyone interested in rare gold coin investing must remember the following points:

  • Expect over grading: Misrepresentation or over grading is a problem that exist in collectible fields, such as stamps, coins, antiques or art. According to experts, almost half of all coins represented as uncirculated in auctions are over graded. The best protection against over grading is to learn how to grade precisely. This can be done by examining the details of the design and major and minor marks, and comparing them with another coin of the same type. The one with the best details and fewest marks is a better choice. Investors can also seek professional assistance for grading coins.
  • No bargains: Finding bargains in the rare gold coin investment marketplace is almost impossible, as investors usually have limited expertise and market exposure. Even if they find a bargain, chances are the coin may be counterfeit or over graded.
  • Value: The value of rare coins is always relative. So, rather than be swayed by price guides, mintage and dealer or collector thinking, concentrate on the coin’s availability.
  • Limited dealer knowledge: As most dealers have little knowledge about rare coin values, it is best to arm yourself with good knowledge.
  • Buy high-quality: As high quality coins are always in great demand, their value also increases rapidly. Hence, purchase the highest quality coins, rather than inferior quality ones.
  • Sell your coins: Remember to sell your coins when they reach their full price potential. This helps investors get acquainted with the market’s selling side and know which dealer has been selling accurately graded coins at the right prices. Besides, it also contributes to learning and helps balance their portfolio by moving into newer territories.

Hence, one of the pre-requisites of successful rare gold coin investing is purchasing properly graded coins at the right price.
