Hiding Gold

Blog Aug 13, 2013

Once one has answered the question of whether or not to buy gold coins or not and have answered in the affirmative, the next logical question is what to do with them.

There are those who advocate for securing them in a safety deposit box at a bank. The down side here is that they are not immediately available, and under certain circumstances, those other than yourself can open and claim the contents. Many suggest getting a safe at home, the bigger and heavier the better. Some are even fireproof.

Other safes are designed to be hidden in the floor or behind a remote controlled sliding Van Gogh (James Bond style). Those in the safe installing industry may advise anticipating that the thieves will have a metal detector which adds another layer to the challenge of hiding a safe full of valuables. One answer is to hide your safe containing your silver investment and gold investment in or near a place that will set off a metal detector by itself and is not easily moved.

Another theory on securing valuables is called “hiding in plain sight.” Thieves look for any telltale signs of riches, like vaults, safes and strong boxes. Therefore the use of an old paint can may be of benefit. Store the valuables in a seal-a-meal bag, then in another, making sure the air is sucked out. Drop the double lined seal-a-meal bags into the remaining paint in the old can and watch the goods sink to the bottom. Just make sure no well-intentioned person decides to do you a favor and clean up those old paint cans in the back.

Generally it is recommended not sharing specifics about ANY of your valuables which includes precious metals which you might hold. The last thing you want is for word to spread that there is a gold hoard in your house. Also it is advised to not store precious metals in PVC containers. Polyvinyl Chloride is highly reactive with silver and as most gold coins contain some amount of silver it would be wise to avoid using PVC for storage altogether.

Rather than intending for what is published here to be the ultimate answer the question of what to do once you buy gold and silver coins, all of these ideas are more to get you thinking outside the box and as this is published on the internet and thieves probably read as well. It will be left up to the reader to cable together the best solution for themselves.
