Market experts claim that from all the Types Of Gold Coins best way to invest in gold is by purchasing gold coins. The reason behind this choice is the high value of these coins and the inherent trust factor. There are basically three types of gold coins to consider acquiring:

  • Bullion coins: The value for bullion coins is based on their gold content in addition to a small premium of approximately 5%-8%. Bullion coins are considered to be the most popular choice of many fiscal connoisseurs due to their high portability and liquidity prospects. The most admired of these coins are the US Eagle, the Austrian Philharmonic, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the South African Krugerrand.
  • Numismatic coins: The value of these coins depends not only on their gold content but also on their quality, rarity, design, minting period and popularity. Because of past performance these coins are considered by many to be the best way to own gold.
  • Commemorative coins: This is a hybrid of the bullion and numismatic coins. The initial buying price for such coins may be higher than the value of gold content and the resale value may be less than you originally paid. Therefore, it is not thought of as a good option for most investors.

Types of Gold Coins: Rare Coins

For those who are interested in buying gold coins more for the purpose of owning a reminiscent of the rich cultural history of the US, there are various varieties of coins available in the market today. Some of these popular ones are:

  • $20 Double Eagle: There are two designs that fall in the category of the Double Eagle:
  • Liberty Head Double Eagle: The US government ordered the minting of these coins during the Californian Gold Rush of 1849. This coin was minted during 1850-1907 and is called ‘the King of American Coins’. The coin depicts the classic Greek interpretation of Lady Liberty on the obverse side and a flying eagle on the reverse side.
  • Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle: This coin was named after its designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was in circulation during 1907-1933. This magnificent historical double eagle coin is said to be the most fine-looking among the precious gold coins in the US. The obverse of the coin depicts the image of Lady Liberty with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The other side features a proud eagle with spread wings. A majority of these coins were melted and transformed into gold bars during the Gold Recall order of 1933, as ordered by the US Congress.
  • $10 Eagle: This has been the most popular coinage in the US for many years. Two famous designs in this category are:
  • Indian Head Eagle: Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and first minted in 1907, this coin remained in circulation until 1933. The obverse side portrays an Indian Chief with a war headpiece and the reverse features a perched American eagle.
  • Liberty Head Eagle: This is one of the most circulated coins in the coinage history of the US. The coin features of Lady Liberty on one side with ‘LIBERTY’ inscribed on her coronet and a fearless eagle on the other.
  • Liberty Head Quarter Eagle: This coin, of $2.50 denomination, was in circulation during 1840-1907. One side of the coin features the bust of Lady Liberty and the opposite side depicts an American Eagle holding an olive branch and bearing arrows.
