The obverse, or front of the coin, displays an elegant rendition of the Walking Lady Liberty. This design was created by Adolph A. Weinman. The design is a favorite of Americans and was very popular when it originally graced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar silver coin. The fifty-cent piece was minted from 1916 to 1947.

The back of the coin, or reverse, shows the engraved depiction of a heraldic eagle behind a shield. The heraldic eagle has been gracing American coinage since the late 1700’s. Earlier versions of the eagle were said to more closely resemble a scrawny chicken. The dignified and bold version of the eagle on the 2017 strike is the work of engraver John Mercanti.

Besides the eagle, which is clutching arrows in the right talon and an olive branch in the left, the reverse of the coin also is marked with inscriptions. “ONE DOLLAR” is the value given, and the weight of “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” is also stated. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is scripted into an arc that frames the top half of the coin. The design also incorporates five-pointed stars to represent the Thirteen Colonies, as well as the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. This phrase is Latin and translates, “Out of many, one.”

The Metal.

The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. For this reason, among others, silver purity is key. The silver contained in these coins is 99.9% pure. About one-tenth of one percent of the coin is copper. The mass of the coin is 1 troy ounce or 31.103 grams. This weight of silver is struck into a coin that has a thickness of .1173 inches (2.98 mm) and a diameter of 1.68 inches (40.6mm) . The edge of the coin has a grooved finish.

The Coin.

The Gold American Eagle bullion coin is the most popular gold bullion coin that the US Mint produces. In 1985, legislation was passed which created the coin and outlined very specific production requirements that are adhered to until this day.

The front design, or obverse, is a regal rendition of Lady Liberty as envisioned and created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In addition to Lady Liberty, a depiction of The Capitol Building can be seen behind her to the left.

Lady Liberty carries in her right hand a torch while holding an olive branch in her left. The word “LIBERTY” is scripted prominently in raised letters. These letters curve around the top of the coin. The front of the coin is also struck with the year the coin was minted, as well as the mintmark if there is one.

The back of the coin, or the reverse of the coin, displays a very detailed engraving of a male eagle, wings outstretched. It is flying over a nest of two eaglets and a female eagle. The male eagle carries an olive branch in his talons. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arc around the top of the coin. The legal tender value of “50 DOLLARS” and the guarantee of “1 OZ. FINE GOLD” are curved around the bottom of the coin. On either side of the eagles is a motto. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” to the left and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right. This design is the work of artist Miley Busiek.

The Metal.

The American Gold Eagle is not 24 karat gold.  The American Gold Eagle is 22 karat gold. In this case, the alloy (blend of metals) is a particular blend known as “Crown Gold”.  5.33% of this coin is copper. 3% of the mass of this coin is silver. The remaining 91.67% of this coin is pure gold. This mixture forms a harder metal and is better suited for the making of durable coins. The mixture also enhances the lustrous shine of the coin.

The reverse, or back of the coin, is dominated by a large maple leaf. The maple leaf is raised and highly detailed. Above the maple leaf is the word “CANADA”. Below the maple leaf arc the words “FINE SILVER” and “1 OZ. ARGENT PUR”. On either side of the maple leaf reads “9999”. This is the purity mark. In this case, the coin is 99.99% pure silver.

The Metal.

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is renowned for being a very pure silver bullion coin. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf weighs 31.1035 grams or one troy ounce. The coin has a diameter of 37.97 millimeters or 1.4948 inches. The thickness of the coin measures .1295 inches or 3.29 millimeters. The edge of the coin is serrated, or reeded.

In addition, the 2017 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf also incorporates anti-counterfeiting and impressive security technology. In 2014 the Canadian silver bullion coin received two new technical advances that carry through to the current 2017 strikes. First, radial lines emanate from the center of both the front and rear designs. The fine lines appear behind the main images. The lines give the coin a lustrous shimmer that other silver bullion coins do not possess.

Furthermore, like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf carries a small laser micro-engraved textured maple leaf. Inside of the maple leaf, there are two digits which correspond with the year the coin was struck. Low power magnification is often required to see the finest details of this security feature.

The reverse, or back of the coin, displays the Canadian Maple Leaf. This leaf is the national symbol of Canada. On either side of the leaf are four nines (9999). These nines indicate that the coin is 99.99% pure gold, or 24 karat. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is revered as being some of the purest available gold. The word “CANADA” appears across the top of the coin while the words “FINE GOLD” and “1 OZ OR PUR” arc around the bottom of the back of the coin.

The Metal.

The one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins have a diameter of 30.00 millimeters or 1.1811 inches. The coins also have grooved edges. The Royal Canadian Mint added unique security factors in recent years that carry over to the 2017 mintage. In 2013, engravers added a laser micro-engraved textured maple leaf to the reverse design. Inside the small maple leaf are two digits corresponding to the year the coin was struck. Low-power magnification is required to see the fine of details of this security measure.

Then, in 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint took gold bullion security to the next level. Small radial lines were added that emanate from the center of the coin and stem outwards. The lines appear only in the back “field” of the coin and do not obscure the designs, both front and back, central to the coin. The fine lines create a rich shimmer and luster.
