2011 America The Beautiful “Glacier” 5oz Silver Coin
The Glacier National Park quarter was second in the series to be released in 2011 and in just the seventh overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This park draws it’s name from the amazing scenery carved by glaciers slowly shaping today’s grand views. February of 1987 is when these lands were first recognized for national reserve status.
This 5 troy-ounce America the Beautiful .999 fine silver coin is a direct descendant of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 which calls for the creation of five ounce, .999 fine silver bullion coins replicating each of the designs featured on the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters. The bullion coins will measure three inches in diameter and have a nominal face value of 25 cents. These are the first five ounce, three inch, .999 fine silver bullion coins ever minted by the United States Mint! The fineness and weight you will find edge-incused on each silver coin.
These limited production coins will be minted in both Proof-strikes and common strikes for both those who like different ways to invest in silver; silver with numismatic value, and silver bullion valued solely for it’s fineness and weight. Each successive minting will feature a designed reverse depicting a national pars and other national site in each state, District of Columbia and five U.S. territories — Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. As stipulated in the coinage act, the coins will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site, giving this series a unique perspective into how these beautiful parks mark the passing of time as America grows older!
According to the U.S. Mint, we can count on seeing many more of these beautiful 5 oz silver coins which may be one of the best silver coins to buy for years and years to come!
“The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a multi-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories—Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Under this program, five new reverse designs will appear on the quarter-dollar each year beginning in 2010 and through 2020, with one final coin in 2021. The United States Mint will also mint and make available for sale silver quarter-dollar uncirculated coins that replicate the designs of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters. These coins are made of .999 fine silver, have a diameter of three inches and weigh five ounces.”
