Australian Silver Coins

The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is the oldest operating mint in Australia, established on June 20, 1899. Originally, the Perth Mint was one of three Royal London Mint branches, and supplied Australia with its own currency. After many years of shipping precious metals mined in Australia to London for refining, and then shipped back to Australia for distribution and circulation, the British government decided it would be more efficient to establish three branches within Australia. The Perth Mint remained under the ownership of Great Britain up until 1970, when the government of Western Australia took ownership. The mint began producing collectible bullion coins after the Gold Corporation took over in 1987.

Popular series from the Perth Mint include the Australian Gold Nugget series, which is also the first Perth Mint bullion series. Other series include the Australian Koala coin series, the Kookaburra coin series, and the Australian Lunar coin series.

 Australian Silver Kookaburra

The Australian Silver Kookaburra series was introduced in 1990 by the Perth Mint. Although the Kookaburra bird is not the most recognizable Australian species, this bird has a very distinct call heard in Australia's outback. Australian Silver Kookaburra coins are composed of .999 fine silver and come is four different sizes: 1 oz., 2 oz., 10 oz., and 1 kg. The Kookaburra silver coin series is popular among investors and collectors due to their silver content and limited yearly mintage.

The obverse (front) side of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadly’s artwork of the Queen Elizabeth II profile image. The obverse is inscribed with the minting year and the words "Queen Elizabeth II,” "Australia," and the face value.

The reverse design of the Silver Kookaburra coin features the Kookaburra songbird in various settings, including Australian skies and the gum trees, its native habitat. The latest addition to the series is the 2015 Kookaburra. In this design, the Kookaburra bird is perched upon a tree stump facing right. The birds’ feathers and the tree leaves demonstrate the great attention to detail. Surrounding the scene are the words "The Australian Kookaburra," the coin weight, silver fineness of ".999 Silver," and the years "1990-2015," celebrating the 25th year of mintage.
